Q: Do I have to come in to your office for a consultation?

A: We offer in person, online or telephonic consultations. When requested, a consultation may be arranged by completing three forms (click here to download forms) and thereafter contacting us to get on our calendar.


Q: Is there a minimum initial payment?

A: Typically, no. The fee arrangement required will depend on the individual matter and can vary depending upon the time, labor, legal questions and requisite skill involved.

Q: What types of payment does The Cowan Firm, LC take?

A: Check, money order, credit card, debit card or e-check.


Q: What are the firm’s rates?

A: The fee arrangement required will depend on the individual matter and can vary depending upon the time, labor, legal questions and requisite skill involved. Non-attorney work is usually charged at 50% of the attorney’s hourly rate.

Q: Does The Cowan Firm, LC take contingency cases?

A: Typically, no. We are compensated for our services by our clients, usually in advance. However, our commercial litigation (tort) and/or entertainment practice may represent certain clients on a case by case full contingency or hybrid contingency basis.

Q: How much is it to consult with The Cowan Firm, LC for the first time?

A: For people who are consulting for the first time the first half hour is at a reduced rate, and time after that is at the attorney’s hourly rate.

For members of a referral agency which we accept, the consultation would be at the rate we have agreed to with the referral agency. Any person asserting that they are members of a referral agency would have to ensure that we were notified in advance of their membership or the consult would be at the first-time consultation rate.

Q: How quickly can I get in for a consult?

A: We try to get people in as fast as possible depending on attorney availability.

Q: What happens if I do not make my appointment?

A: If you call and cancel, that is fine, although we appreciate notice at least 24 hours in advance. If you cancel two times, you lose your right to a reduced fee consultation.

If you “no show” for your appointment (you don’t come in or call), you will lose your reduced fee consultation. Thereafter, to get back on our calendar you will have to provide a non-refundable payment in advance to cover a minimum half hour consultation at the attorney’s hourly rate.

Q: With what types of matters does The Cowan Firm, LC assist?

A: We are a boutique business law firm that helps with issues germane to the following macro areas of law: Tax, Tort, Technology, Intellectual Property, Immigration, Corporate, Consumer, Entertainment, Estate Planning, Real Estate. Q: Is the firm comprised of tax law specialists and/or CPAs?

A: The Cowan Law Firm, LC. is not a specialty tax law firm or CPA. Thus, we will not provide you with any specialized tax or compliance related advice with respect to advanced taxation. You will need to seek independent specialized tax legal advice and/or consult with a CPA. Our advice is focused on asset protection and tax avoidance (not illegal tax evasion) for pre startups, startups and/or small businesses on a macro level.

Q: Is the firm’s immigration practice asset protection based?

A: Yes, we can help minimize a client’s exposure to U.S. Income Tax on worldwide income with divestments before they become a US citizen or US resident; We can help reduce a client’s exposure to U.S. estate taxes on global holdings with timely gift transfers to pre-Immigration foreign irrevocable Trusts. These transfers can also protect a client’s assets from future potential creditors. Otherwise, a client may find him/herself in the unfortunate position of paying U.S. income taxes on worldwide income and possibly subjecting their entire global estate to U.S. taxation without any means of asset protection.

A: Our firm is very busy and its’ time is valuable. As such, no resources are available to respond to questions on issues without a scheduled consultation. If you want answers, a consultation should be scheduled.
